Woke up with a muscle strain on my right side, in the lat/oblique area. Perhaps a residual effect of the intense day of weight lifting and yard work five days before? Wouldn’t think so, considering the number of days in between — if I had damaged myself, I’d have known within two or three days.

I consider myself in reasonably good shape for my age, but there’s certain realities that one cannot hide from as you do age, and one of those is the way your body responds to physical exertion. I’m grateful that I can keep up with the young un’s, but I know that while they can bounce back with little effort, this engine needs its rest.

So today, I still go to the gym, but I don’t push myself. Need to move, keep the muscles in motion, but today needs to be more about recuperation than exertion.
